Abstract:

Farmers play a fundamental role in shaping rural development, especially in agrarian economies like India where agriculture remains the main source of livelihood and economic activity. Rural development is closely linked to agricultural productivity, infrastructural development, employment generation and socio-economic transformation. This article examines the relationship between farmers and rural development by analysing the economic, social, environmental and technological dimensions of agriculture. It highlights the contribution of farmers to food security, employment and national economic development. The article also discusses the key challenges faced by farmers such as climate change, lack of access to credit, fragmented land tenure and market uncertainties. Furthermore, it explores the role of government policies, modern technology and sustainable agricultural practices in strengthening rural economies. The study concludes that empowering farmers through institutional support, digital inclusion, infrastructural development and policy reforms is essential for sustainable rural development and national progress.
